Rejected by the Paris Salon, this well known work was first exhibited in the Salon des Refusés. Emile Zola wrote at length about this work. The English transcript can be found on Wikipedia. One theory about it’s origins is that it depicted a sex worker and referred to prostitution  which was apparently common in the park in which the picnic takes place.

  1. Clever idea for a prompt, Indie. I’m looking forward to the next Art Twist. Manet is one of my favorite artists, but I have never liked this painting. It will be fun to see what others do.

Also, there is nothing wrong with using the frogy link. A lot of prompt groups use it and it works well, so don’t apologize.
